Welcome to our summer blog edition!

We think it is time to get serious about skin- so what exactly are advanced aesthetics? …..

We use the term ‘Advanced Aesthetics’ to distinguish between our much loved beauty maintenance treatments such as waxing, manis pedis and basic product facials and more targeted treatments such as laser, HIFU, skin tightening, anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.

We now live in a world with high personal visibility via online apps such as Zoom, Instagram, Facebook Live and Tiktok and these platforms are showcasing many new treatments and trends every day.

So, we look ever more closely at ourselves in the mirror and wonder what we should be doing more/less of for our skin and body care.

Don’t get me wrong, making cosmetic changes is not for everyone, and we must never forget the importance of having a great diet, adequate exercise and proper relaxation in order to maintain our general and mental wellbeing.

However, there are choices out there for those who would also like to ‘tweak’ certain aspects of themselves in order to feel beautiful, bold, confident, happy, content …..and that is fine too!

While beauty maintenance is important for the basics the more advanced aesthetic treatments just go a bit further by providing us with solutions to more tricky issues such as acne prone skin, rosacea, prolific hair growth, loss of skin firmness and lines caused by skin aging.

INJECTABLE SKIN TREATMENTS- what are they for

There can be confusion around injectable treatments. What do they do? Why do people have them? Who are they for? What are they for?

  1. Anti wrinkle injections- as the name suggests this treatment relaxes deep and fine expression lines on the upper face. A protein called Botulinum Toxin is used by injecting it into the muscles that we use more frequently for our facial expressions such as the frontalis on the forehead. The muscle receptors are temporarily blocked and the movement in the muscle is restricted having the effect of relaxing the visible lines.
  2. Dermal Fillers- hyaluronic acid is dermal filler. We are used to seeing this ingredient now as it is present in the skin already as well as widely used in moisturisers. The injectable version is specifically designed to maintain its shape and be used to give definition. For example if you have dermal fillers in the cheeks you will see a change in the shape of your upper face.
  3. Profhilo – is injectable moisturiser! This is the one that works on the skin itself. Again this is hyaluronic acid but in liquid form and is injected just beneath the surface of skin while you sit back and watch the magic happen…..fabulous for tired, dehydrated and stressed out skin.

*All of these treatments require a face to face consultation with a medical professional. We as therapists can tell you all about them but we cannot actually perform them. We work with Teena William RGN and her appointments can be booked through our website. www.skinfitclinic.co.uk/booknow

SKIN TIGHTENING

Ok so we can improve our upper face using injectable treatments but what about the lower face? Eventually we can see the softening of our jawline, or neck or thighs as we age and we are often not overly happy about it. Because neither toxin nor filler work on skin laxity the best option for tightening and firming the skin is Radio Frequency or Ultra Sound.

Both of these technologies work on stimulating a reaction within the deeper layers of skin that results in the formation of new collagen. As this process takes place the skin begins to feel firmer and stronger, giving you back some contours.

Collagen production is progressive and results are never instant therefore this is a treatment that is best planned in advance.

HIFU

One more step up from Radio Frequency in the skin tightening treatments is HIFU- High Intesity Focused Ultrasound. This is a non surgical skin tightening procedure that uses ultra sound energy to target skin laxity and lifts sagging skin. This is an alternative to surgical facelifts and is becoming more popular because it works! and there is no downtime in comparison to aesthetic surgery, it has reduced risk and cost. Three things we get asked all the time about HIFU are:

  • How MANY hifu treatments do I need? – usually we say you only need actually ONE in order to achieve results however as your skin ages it will change so realistically you will need one every 6-9 months.
  • How LONG will it take to see results?- this is the big one. You will feel and see skin laxity improve after one session however consistent and repeated sessions will increase skin lifting and definition over time. It will take up to 12 weeks for the deeper collagen to firm up completely and come to the surface of the skin so you need be patient too.
  • How long do the RESULTS last?- The results will last as long as you treat and look after your skin. Home care is vital and do remember that your skin will still continue to age so results are never permanent beyond a point.
